Quotables: Calligraphy

In [the traditions of] China and Japan, calligraphy actively engages the mind, body, and spirit and (like yoga) is guided by rhythmic breathing.  Throughout the breath, the calligrapher strives to achieve a balance of sei and bi -- of accuracy and beauty.

I've often mused that writing one's name, deliberately and thoughtfully, atop a page is a profound act.  It claims and defines an identity.  Perhaps that idea is a tiny breath of the same spirit as the quote above.
